| Descripció/abstract | The present Teaming application proposes the creation of the first Centre of Excellence (CoE) with an explicit and fully integrated focus on investigating the impact of social interventions across multiple biological levels, namely the organismal, cellular, and molecular scales. This CoE will pioneer a holistic and interdisciplinary research model for high-impact health and biomedical research in Europe, integrating social and biological sciences in a manner not previously achieved. The Institute for Integrated Social and Biological Assessment (IISB) is a Teaming partnership between the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal (a widening, low-performing country), the University of Cambridge (UCam), United Kingdom, and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), Spain. The new CoE is promoted by two internationally recognized research institutes at the University of Coimbra, both classified by the Portuguese government as Associate Laboratories (a status of excellence): the Centre for Social Studies (CES) and the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB). The initiative is further supported by Colab4Ageing, a non-profit private association that brings together multiple stakeholders in the field of ageing. In addition, IISB will benefit from the involvement of a national reference healthcare institution, the Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS Coimbra), as an associate member of the proposal. The IISB core structure will comprise a scientific team of 7 group leaders, including 5 newly recruited research groups and 2 existing groups that will relocate to the new CoE. This structure will be supported by a state-of-the-art research infrastructure, encompassing two core facilities (bioinformatics and extracellular vesicles), as well as a Social Innovation Unit. Through its integrated approach, IISB will contribute to the international wellbeing economy movement, significantly reducing the demand for healthcare services while enhancing individual productivity. |
