Bite Ecology from Avian Kinematics and Shape

Acrònim BEAKS
Títol projecte Bite Ecology from Avian Kinematics and Shape
Referència externa 101197420
Descripció/abstract Supported by the Marie Skodowska-Curie Actions programme, the BEAKS project aims to investigate the factors that influence the shape and function of birds’ beaks. Combining methods of geometric morphometrics, finite element analysis and phylogenetic modelling, it will map the evolutionary patterns of beak shape and function in relation to habitat, body size, nutrition and external parasite load. Based on these patterns, BEAKS will then estimate subsequent evolutionary trajectories with respect to anthropogenic climate change and predict which species may require intervention to prevent their extinction in the future. Overall, the project will provide a better understanding of avian evolutionary processes and contribute to global efforts to preserve biodiversity and fragile ecosystems.
