Lourdes Beneria i Farré, emeritus professor at Cornell University and pioneer in the field of feminist and labour economics, has been awarded an honorary degree by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, sponsored by Maria Llop i Llop, a lecturer and current head of the Department of Economy.

Lourdes Beneria, who graduated in Economics from the University of Barcelona and was awarded a doctorate by the University of Columbia (United States), has been a member of expert committees of such international organisations as the International Labour Organization and the United Nations Development Fund for Women. Among other awards, she has received the Alice Cook Award from Cornell University (2000); the Narcís Monturiol Medal of the Government of Catalonia (2002); the President Macià Medal for Work of the Government of Catalonia (2016) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Saint George's Cross) (2018).

She is an expert in the analysis and quantification of women's unpaid work, the care economy and the relations between globalization, gender and development, and she has denounced the effects of structural adjustment policies on developing countries and put forward alternatives to orthodox economic theory because it does not take into account the role of women. For this reason, Beneria has come up with new methods for studying and quantifying fundamental aspects of the economy, such as domestic work and care.
