Master's Thesis - Teaching Spanish in Catalan prisons
Coordination: José Antonio Moreno Villanueva (joseantonio.moreno@urv.cat)
Community organization: Tarragona Penitentiary Center.
Summary: The final project was carried out during the academic year 2013-14 and was part of the Master's Degree thesis, which aims to implement the knowledge acquired from the professional track of the programme. In particular, the Service Learning experience presented here developed a unit for teaching Spanish as a foreign language to the Catalan prison population. In order to adjust the teaching materials to the reality of the classroom and meet the needs of potential users, the student first needed to acquire first-hand knowledge of the real context of teaching and learning by holding interviews with the head training at Tarragona prison and the staff that usually taught Spanish there. Class observation was also used as a tool to better meet the requirements of regular users and classes. The ultimate goal was for the teaching materials to be made available to teachers in charge of Spanish classes in Catalan prisons so that they can be used in the classroom.
Organisation: Tudela Public Centre for Adult Basic Education (CPEBPA).
Abstract: The experience takes place within the framework of a master's thesis that focuses on the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) at the Public Centre for Adult Basic Education (CPEBPA) in Tudela. The experience allows the theoretical training of the master's degree to be applied in a real educational context, with the aim of serving the community. The ultimate goal is the creation of a bank of complementary materials to improve the effectiveness of the methodology used at the school. To achieve this, the study is based on an analysis of the ELE teaching materials used in the CPEBPA. To design and create materials appropriate to the intended context, it is essential to carry out a comprehensive diagnosis of the needs of both teachers and students, reflecting these results in the new teaching materials. Through interviews with staff, gaps will be detected and areas for improvement in current resources will be defined, with the aim of developing complementary materials that fit these specific needs. Once created, the materials will be permanently available at the school, strengthening and enriching its courses.
Abstract: The experience takes place within the framework of a master's thesis that focused on the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) at Càritas Tarragona, in the year 2024-2025. The experience applies the theoretical training of the master's degree in a real educational context, at the service of the community.
The ultimate goal is the creation of a specific programme for new Spanish students that helps volunteer teachers carry out their teaching tasks more professionally and effectively. In order to achieve this objective, the study is based on an analysis of the needs of the school and the teaching staff.
To design the programming in a rigorous way, it is essential to carry out a comprehensive diagnosis of the needs of both teachers and students. Through interviews with staff, gaps will be detected and areas for improvement in current programming that fit these specific needs will be defined. This programming, which will be the final result of the study, will be transferred to Caritas Tarragona and will be permanently available at the school, strengthening and enriching the quality of its courses.
