Service Learning Experiences in the Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering

Final project - Project on water management

  • Coordination: Jordi Gavaldà (jordi.gavalda(ELIMINAR)@urv.cat)
  • Community organization: Bellmunt del Priorat Town Council
  • Summary: The final project gives students the opportunity to conduct work that has real-life implications and provides a service to society. Students therefore become more aware of the social actions they can carry out through their university studies. This year's final project evolved from a request by the Bellmunt del Priorat Town Council for advice on how to manage the lead and sulphate components in the town's water supply. During the academic year 2012-2013 and 2014-15, and under the supervision of a lecturer in our department, the students developed a water management project that was both a constructive project in chemical engineering and a service learning project for the students to learn and develop their competences. And, in the end, the town was provided with a service (the technical plan to improve its water quality). Moreover, the students shared their experiences with the wider community using communication techniques such as presentations, conferences and debates.

Final Degree Project - Standardization of plants for the treatment of drinking water in the region of Orellana (Ecuador)

  • Coordination: Jordi Gavaldà (jordi.gavalda(ELIMINAR)@urv.cat)
  • Community organization: Enginyeria Sense Fronteres.
  • Summary: The present study realized during the academyc years 2015-16 and 2016-17 searches to standardize drinking water treatment plants in small and isolated population centers. Currently any of these cores has plants with different technologies, making difficult the operations and the maintenance. The idea is to have a single model of plant scalable, with the operation and maintenance of the same much easier.
