ROTSPANIER. Els esclaus espanyols del nazisme
A documentary film that recovers the forgotten history of almost 70,000 exiles who worked forcibly and in extreme conditions under the Vichy regime and the German occupation of France between 1940 and 1944.

The forgotten history of the Rotspanier -literally "red Spaniards"-, the name by which the Germans called the republicans of this country, is recovered from the hands of historians specialized in this subject. Tens of thousands of people were forced to work in very harsh conditions to build the five enormous submarine bases and the three thousand bunkers that make up the Atlantic Wall, and which still remain on the French coast.
'Rotspanier. The Spanish slaves of Nazism' also delves into the memory of other exiles forced to work in the war and textile industries, in extreme conditions that left them with physical and psychological sequelae for the rest of their lives, when not led them to death. The film recover all those histories trough the voice of descendants, who claim the need to remove them from oblivion and in many cases also give the recognition for their active participation in the struggle for the liberation of France from the Nazi occupation.
The documentary, awarded with the Lorca 2023 prize, was produced with the support of the Government of Spain and the Provincial Council of Cádiz, the EU Europe for Citizens program, through the CECOS Research Group of the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona, and the association Nouvelle Aquitaine Andalousie.

The screening will take place on Monday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. in the Aula Magna of teh Campus Catalunya, of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili.
Afterwards, there will be a conversation with Rafael Guerrero (director), Isidre Monreal (director of photography) and Ignacio Fiz (CECOS-URV researcher) with the special participation of Pierre Souchard (Mere 29 Association - Memory of the Spanish Republican Exile).
In the hall you can visit the 'Rotspanier' exhibition curated by Jaume Camps and Rocío Arnal.
