PAPER PLACES [LLOCS DE PAPER]
REPHOTOGRAPHING. Delving into archives. Selecting. Carefully tracing the marks of where someone has looked before. Setting documents, bodies, and technologies in motion. Photographing an already recorded scene once again.
Observing, confronting, updating, reclaiming, speculating, reflecting... and... and... and...
Ultimately, shaping a polysemic object that is at once visual and material, in which fleeting acts of looking become traces: lines and tangled threads that are inscribed and gradually fixed, with fragility, onto the pages of this publication.
The magazine you can download here is the outcome of the Paper Places [Llocs de Paper] visual laboratory, as well as four years of pedagogical research into teaching the methodology of rephotography as a means of fostering critical and creative inquiry in the fields of art history and archaeology.
The project began as a modest classroom initiative at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and gradually evolved by opening itself to the wider community through essential collaborations with creative practitioners from the region. These partnerships made it possible to materialise this experience first in the exhibition Once Upon a Time, presented in the space managed and curated by the Photo Km0 Association at Tarragona's bus station (June-September 2025), and, this year, in the present printed object of reflection.
Within these pages, you will find not only the dialogue between the original photographs and the rephotographs produced by the students, but also the metamorphoses generated through this process of translation. As the images return-both physically and symbolically-to the places where they were originally taken, and are confronted with the present, they themselves change, transforming those of us who look at them, interpret them, and rework them.
Every visual document, every note, every experiment, and every reflection gathered here constitutes a slice of time that reveals the traces of a lived, sensory experience. Each project embodies the sediment of a personal journey and of multiple processes of research, observation, displacement, and transformation. Together, they form a polyphonic narrative that begins in family, historical, and artistic archives-living spaces where images that seem to lie dormant, laden with memory and oblivion alike, acquire renewed vitality when they are called into question.
The digitised excerpts from the physical journals that accompany the projects were conceived not only as working tools but also as creative artefacts: spaces for sketching and imagining, for ordering and disordering, for documenting the oscillations of thought, and for fabulation.
This publication invites readers on a haptic journey in which ink impressed upon dense vegetal fibres records experiences, fixes transformations, and allows vision itself to become tangible. It is also a constellation of reinterpretations and intertwined trajectories; ultimately, it is a new web of meanings woven around the archive.
