Unpacking the Future of Mountain Communities Under Climate and Development Pressures: Coping with Change

Acronym MOUNTCOM
Project title Unpacking the Future of Mountain Communities Under Climate and Development Pressures: Coping with Change
External reference 101274977
Description/abstract The MOUNTCOM project investigates the complex social dynamics of mountain territories, which face dual challenges from overreliance on tourism and increasing climate vulnerabilities. Applying an innovative interdisciplinary framework of critical tourism, mobilities studies, and biopolitics, this research examines how communities cope with climate threats, assert agency, and negotiate future livelihoods in the context of major developments, particularly mega-events like the Winter Olympic Games. The project's scientific ambition is to directly address a critical challenge for European policy: the need for a more resilient and inclusive development model for these regions. The Italian Alps (hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics) and the Spanish Pyrenees (whose 2030 bid was withdrawn, but eyeing a revamped bid for 2042+) will serve as a laboratory for examining the evolution of this complex landscape. Through an ethnographic approach, MOUNTCOM analyzes local perceptions of climate impacts, investigates climate-induced mobilities, and critically assesses the biopolitical dimensions of governance. The project aims to offer vital insights into the future of mountain regions, revealing how emerging forms of agency and resistance can challenge established power structures and shape policy.
