Service Learning Experiences in the Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture


Solar Decathlon VI (Plan being discontinued)

  • Summary: This project offers students a comprehensive experience in which they have to draw a map of a plot of land in order to determine how it can be used and what kind of construction can be built there in accordance with the legislation and the preferences of users. Students must also every effort to use recycled materials. They experience areal situation in which they have to abide by the maxim of doing more with less.

    • Academic year 2013-14: Institute of Valls Studies, Salvem la Platja Llarga i el Bosc de la Marquesa, La Canonja 3. oble, Paisatge, Sostenibilitat, Consorci per a la preservació del paisatge agrícola de la plana de secà de l'Alt Camp.
    • Academic year 2014-15: : Assemblea Aturem BCN World, GEPEC,Veïns del Barri Immaculada Association, Defensa del Territori i el Patrimoni de Riudecols Association (DELTERPA).
  • Summary: Students complete the practical component (3 credits) of this course in regions with unique territorial and landscape dynamics. Interacting with territorial agents in each field, students provide strategies for organizing and managing the various landscape components. Their work involves analyzing the territory, conducting field work, and preparing proposals for improving landscape quality. Divided into three groups, they work in areas that further develop the experience they gained on previous courses. The first group works with the Pinell de Brai Town Council in Terra Alta to improve the town’s façade and surrounding landscape. The second group works with the Riudecols Town Council in the Baix Camp to regenerate an old motocross track and investigate how it can best serve the town and its agroforestry environs. And the third group examines the landscape around the southern chemical industrial complex located between the municipalities of Tarragona, La Canonja, Reus and Vila-seca.

Solar Decathlon VI

  • Summary: In this Service Learning experience, students develop a sustainable and energy efficient housing construction project. One of the activities students carry out is to raise social awareness of sustainability at home and provide information about this type of housing. This experience gives students an approach to their future profession as architects and also a heightened awareness of architecture, sustainability and energy efficiency.
