Statement of equivalence of foreign higher education studies at the doctorate level

  • DESCRIPTION: This is the procedure by which the foreign qualification, from the date it was first issued, is empowered with the same rights as the qualification for which equivalence to the academic level of doctor has been requested, throughout the national territory and in accordance with current regulations

Application procedure

Who

The interested party or the authorized person on presentation of the necessary identification.

What

  • Statement that the foreign higher education qualification, which has been awarded for courses done at higher education institutions outside Spain, is equivalent to the academic level of doctor.
  • Statement that the foreign higher education qualification, which has been awarded for courses totally or partly done at institutions outside Spain that have been duly authorized by the competent Spanish authorities, is equivalent to.

When

When required.

Where

At the URV's General Registry or any of the auxiliary registries.

How

By presenting the following documentation:

Original and photocopy or photocopy attested by the competent authorities of:

  • Proof of identity and nationality of the applicant. This document must be current and not expired.
  • The doctoral certificate whose equivelence is being requested or the document to prove that it has been awarded, duly legalized and officially translated into Catalan or Spanish.
  • Academic transcript of the subjects that the applicant has studied to obtain the doctoral degree, officially translated into Catalan or Spanish if necessary and which must show:
    - the official duration of the degree in academic years
    - the curriculum followed
    - the subjects studied, if necessary
    - the number of hours for each subject and the grades, if available
  • Copy of the thesis in the language in which it was defended.
  • Summary of the thesis, in Catalan, Spanish or English, which should indicate the members of the examination panel and the grade awarded.
  • Statement that the student has neither requested nor been awarded the equivalence to the academic level of doctor by any other Spanish university for the same qualification.
  • A copy of the resolution issued by the University if the equivalence has previously been requested.
  • Proof that the fee for requesting the academic equivalence has been paid.

If the competent body or the corresponding committees consider it necessary, they may request additional documentation.

Documents issued in other countries must accomplish with some requisites:

► Legalization of academic documents issued abroad: Doctoral Degree Certificate

► Translation of academic documents: Doctoral Degree Certificate and Academic transcript of the subjects that the applicant has studied to obtain the doctoral degree (bear in mind that you must translate officially both documents to Catalan or Spanish whatever the language of issuance).

Appraisal of the documentation

Who

Doctoral School.

When

On receipt of the original application and the attested documentation issued by the Registry.

August is not considered to be a working month.

How

  • By checking that the documentation is in order and, if appropriate, meets the necessary.

Observations

If there is any documentation that the applicant has not presented or if there is any infringement of the established requirements, the applicant will be required to rectify this situation within 10 days.

If the applicant fails to rectify the situation within this period, the URV will reject the application.

Resolution of the application

Who

The Rector of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili.

When

Within a maximum of six months from the presentation of the application form.

August is not considered to be a working month.

How

The favourable or unfavourable report on the application will be drafted by the academic committee responsible for the doctoral programme that has most in common with the qualification whose equivalence is being requested.

The Doctoral School will send the agreement, together with the committee's report to the appropriate Office of the Vice-Rector for approval by the URV's Academic Policy Committee.

Observations

An administrative appeal can be filed against this resolution (which terminates the administrative proceedings) to the Administrative Court in Tarragona, within two months, counting from the day after receiving notification, as can an optional appeal to the body that has issued the resolution within one month of the day after receiving notification.

Issuance of the Credential of Homologation

Who

The Rector of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili.

When

Once the application for equivalence to a doctoral degree has been satisfactorily resolved.

August is not considered to be a working month.

How

A favourable resolution will take the form of a document that certifies the equivalence to a doctoral degree issued by the rector of the URV, in accordance with the model stipulated by the Council for University Coordination, in two languages (Catalan and Spanish). The document will state the name of the foreign qualification held by the applicant.

The applicant must pay the corresponding fee for the credential to be issued. Once this has been done the URV will inform the General Sub-Directorate of Certificates and Recognition of Qualifications of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport so that the qualification can be inscribed in the National Qualifications Register.

Observations

Under no circumstances does the equivalence to a doctoral degree mean that the holder's undergraduate qualification or similar is also considered to be equivalent or officially recognised.

End of the procedure: issuance of the credential

Who

Academic Management Service.

When

Once the certificate of equivalence to a doctoral degree has been issued.

August is not considered to be a working month.

How

The Academic Management Service will inform the applicant so that he/she can collect the credential, after first ensuring that the applicant has paid the corresponding fee.

The applicant must collect the credential in person or issue a letter of attorney that authorizes a representative to do so. In both cases the person collecting the credential must present his/her identity card or passport.
