DOW/URV Chair of Sustainable Development - Book "Desenvolupament sostenible"

Is our development sustainable?

This is the main question of the book "Desenvolupament sostenible" ("Sustainable Development"), apart from other questions that are raised in order to make the reader reflect on it and draw his own conclusions based on the information analysis and a set of figures and data tables.

The economic development of the societies is sustained by a series of human activities that generate wealth and also cause environmental impact, as these activities use a great amount of natural resources which often cannot be renewed, thus they are about to be exhausted. The real development should be based not only on the economic viability, but also on the environmental protection and the social equity. That is the only way to have a sustainable development, according to its definition from the Brundtland Report: Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
