Recommended profile

New students must have a good knowledge of the qualification's basic subjects and in particular of the fundamental principles of chemistry, physics and mathematics. Students should also have a good written and spoken command of their native language and of the official languages of the URV, in addition to a basic command of a foreign language, preferably English, and IT skills.


The last year of the bachelor's degree aims to strengthen students' transversal competencies, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, team working skills and decision-making skills, among others. The internship subject allows students to develop these competencies and to gain experience of working in a professional environment related to chemistry. Furthermore, students are immersed in the dynamics of the company or institution and thus acquire inside knowledge of chemical companies, R+D centres, analysis laboratories or schools, to give just a few examples.


The Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry has been designed to reflect developments in the scientific discipline, the knowledge required by society and the career opportunities available in the current employment market. The degree's general objectives are as follows:

  • To increase students' interest in learning about chemistry and to involve them in the stimulating and satisfactory experience of learning and studying.
  • To provide students with a solid and balanced foundation in chemistry and practical skills that enable them to evaluate applications of chemistry in different contexts.
  • To develop students' ability to apply chemical, theoretical and practical knowledge to solving problems in chemistry.
  • To provide students, through training in chemistry, with a range of valuable skills both within and outside the ambit of chemistry.
  • To provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to enable them to continue their studies in specialised areas of chemistry or interdisciplinary areas.
  • To foster students' ability to evaluate the importance of chemistry in industrial, economic, environmental and social settings.

Bachelor's thesis

In the bachelor's thesis, students have to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills and competencies associated with the qualification by writing, presenting and defending an extended piece of work. The thesis is evaluated on the basis of its content and structure (definition of objectives, introduction and/or justification, experimental section, analysis and discussion of results, conclusions and bibliography) and on the student's oral and written communication skills.


To meet these objectives, the degree programme must ensure that the students acquire and develop the following competencies:

  • Understanding and applying the principal aspects of chemical terminology, nomenclature, terms, agreements and units.
  • Understanding the fundamental principles of physics and chemistry and how they relate to the various areas of this discipline, and having a thorough grounding in characterisation, reactivity and the main elements, organic compounds, biomolecules, properties, synthetic paths involved in chemistry.
  • Extracting quality chemical information regarding natural and artificial objects by using the standard processes of measurement applied in chemistry.
  • Evaluating the impact and importance of chemistry in all areas of life, such as industry, environment, pharmaceutics, health, agriculture and food production, etc.
  • Understanding the unitary operations used in the chemical and related industries.
  • Identifying macroscopic properties and individual atomic and molecular properties, including natural and synthetic macromolecules, polymers, colloids and other materials.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of fundamental facts, concepts, principles and theories in chemistry and applying them in a practical context.
  • Demonstrating the skills needed to identify and solve qualitative and quantitative problems with a strategic focus on laboratory work involving documented chemical procedures (synthesis and analysis), monitoring chemical properties, processes and changes, documenting all work carried out, managing risks, using standard chemistry equipment in an appropriate manner, making numerical calculations and interpreting experimental data with a particular emphasis on precision and accuracy.

Career opportunities

On completing this qualification, the graduate has the skills to analyse and control the composition, properties and natural or induced transformations of substances; to study the composition and structure of materials; to carry out processes in the chemical and energy industries; and to develop and monitor chemical processes in industry, pharmaceutics, recycling and waste management.

It provides the graduate with the skills to work in the public and private sectors and to teach in secondary and higher education and in professional training and to teach in technical schools and universities after completing the relevant master's degree and meeting any other specific requirements.

In the ambit of research it enables the graduate to work in universities, public and private research centres and in the R+D+I departments of companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, health and cosmetics sectors, among others.
