Publication ways, versions of documents and funding for open-access publishing

What is open access?

Open access is free, unrestricted online access to research and academic output. It is a system that enables society to benefit from research financed by public funds.

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) provides information about the journals that allow open-access publication.

Open-access publication channels

  • Gold open access: Publication of scientific output in open-access journals.
  • Hybrid open access: Publication in open-access journals, after payment of a processing fee (Article Processing Charge - APC)
  • Green open access: Deposit of a version of a scientific article published in a traditional journal in an open-access repository. This is also known as self-archiving.
