The writer Joan Perucho i Gutiérrez (1920-2003) was a law graduate and served as a judge for many years. Born in Barcelona, he wrote throughout his life in numerous literary genres. From 1976 he was a member of the Academy of Arts, and he was awarded the Catalan Cross of Saint George, the National Prize for Culture, the Rosalía de Castro Prize and Barcelona City Council’s Medal of Merit, among other distinctions.

He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Rovira i Virgili University on 10 November 1995 together with Lluís Delclòs. Josep M. Pujol, lecturer in the Department of Catalan Philology at the URV, gave a speech as his sponsor in which he praised the continued and historical relevance of the works of Joan Perucho, and who first became known with the book of poetry Sota la sang (Underneath the blood) (1947).
