Who is eligible to do a doctorate?

In order to be able to do a doctorate, you must have completed a master’s degree or a degree of a similar level. Your qualification must enable you to enter a doctoral programme in the country in which it was issued.

Doctoral programmes are linked to master’s degrees, so if you are interested in a particular doctoral programme but you do not comply with all the requisites, you can register on a master’s programme.

How can I register for a doctoral programme?

International doctorate

To obtain the European doctorate award, doctoral students must have completed a study visit of at least three months outside Spain, during which they have continued their studies or carried out research work. Part of their thesis must be written and presented in one of the languages commonly used for scientific communication other than the official languages of Spain. Their thesis must have been reviewed by at least two doctors specializing in the field from a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute. And at least one non-Spanish specialist must be on the examination panel that assesses the thesis.

Quality award

The Spanish Ministry of Education distinguishes some doctoral programmes with the Quality Award. This award is recognition of the scientific, technical and training quality of the programme as a whole and of the groups or departments that are responsible for the doctoral training.
