The linguist and thinker Noam Chomsky was invested in a ceremony in the URV’s Auditorium on the 30 October 1998. Dr. José Eugenio García-Albea, who at the time was head of the Department of Psychology at the URV, was his sponsor.

A professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), this North American intellectual has revolutionized the study of grammar and his linguistic works have resonated throughout the language sciences. His knowledge of linguistics, psychology, philosophy, the history of thought, contemporary events, international relations and the foreign policy of the United States, among others can be seen in hundreds of publications and conferences.

In his speech, Noam Chomsky spoke of his concern for social problems and defended the subversive and liberating role of the university.
