During the course
1989-1990 an interdisciplinary research group is created: GREC (gender,
race, ethnic group and class). This initiative was originated from
teachers of different specialities (Anthropology, History, Philology),
who had the will of working continuously and organising common interests,
so far only individual ones, with the same objective: gender, race,
ethnics and class studies. Trough teaching activities, publications,
research lines, articles, congresses or conferences, our group started
with the intention of motivating those studies from diverse perspectives
(history, comparative history, literary history, philology, language,
anthropology, communication media, cultural studies, etc.)
GREC (gender, race, ethnics and class) because we understand gender
is the cultural construction of sex and we reject its perversion in
any type of sexism; race and ethnics as human being divisions according
to common features and we reject their perversion in any type of racism:
class as a social category and we reject its perversion in any type
of classism.
GREC want to thank
in a public way to Mrs. Marta Rourich, graphics designer, for the
permission to use her poster Iguales, presented in the second edition
of the 2005 Woman International Day poster contest organised by The
Woman Catalonian Institute, with the aim of including it in this web
site.
The teachers who
started the group (Dolors Comas d'Argemir, Coral Cuadrada, Elisabet
Hungtinford, Elizabeth Russell, Montserrat Sanmartí, Joana Zaragoza)
consider as an important issue the fact of widening the perspectives
of GREC with the aim of wining diverse contributions at the moment of
working with multidisciplinary fields. Now, GREC count with specialists
from other disciplines (Archaeology, Architecture, Biochemistry, History-graphic
Sciences and Techniques, Cinema, Law, Business, Art History, Nursery,
Medicine, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology and Social Working)
The interdisciplinary group bases its works from clear lines:
- Research, publications and organisation of seminars,
workshops and Congresses
- Implantation of gender studies at the Rovira and
Virgili University participating in other seminars with similar objectives.
- Collaboration and participation in national and international gender
studies networks to promote the interchange of experiences and to influence
the academic curriculum and the cultural constructions of the society.
