General Aims of the Doctorate
The main aim of the doctorate is to produce doctors for high quality and advanced research. To this end, the general aims of the course are the following:
- To incorporate the students into a research group.
- To broaden their skills so that they can specialize in different aspects of the lines of research set out in the programme.
- To strengthen students' initiative in developing research projects with a methodology and scientific principles appropriate to their field of research.
- To foster general individual and team working abilities, participation in research projects, bibliographical database management, etc.
- To produce a doctoral thesis.
Structure of Doctorate
The doctorate is based on tutor-supported research (for the doctoral thesis itself) which can be supplemented with lectures or seminars in areas linked to the doctorate's lines of research, given by nationally and internationally renowned specialists.
The formation period of the doctorate programme is linked to the following Master's degree introduced on the University (in order to the RD 1393/2007):

Global Strategies for Sustainable Development
On the basis of interdisciplinary legal experience in environmental law and knowledge brought by members of a previous research group in Citizenship, Immigration and Minorities, this group designs strategies for sustainable development formulated within legal frameworks intended to promote the preservation of the environment and the management of population flows.

Accumulated interdisciplinary work and the participation of areas such as Philosophy of Law, Constitutional Law and Public International Law make it possible for this line of research to focus on establishing the fundamental conceptual aspects of environmental law as a secure base for development and effective interpretation.

Environmental Management of Productive Actors
So far most of research group's activities in this field have focused on projects related to the prevention and control of pollution and responsibility for environmental damage. This involves designing efficient legal instruments to control the use of resources and the environmental burden of the various productive actors.

Local Government and Sustainable Development
Since the Rio Summit, local administrations have become key players in designing strategies for sustainable development and environmental protection. Studying their role, and in particular, how they draw up and implement their own local agenda 21 is one of the fields in which this research group works.

Admission
- Maximum number of students: 20
- Criteria for admission and selection:
The fulfilment of the established conditions, as a requirement of admission in the 19th article and 4th addicional order of the RD 1393/2007, is necessary to be able to entry at the Doctorate Program while its research mode.
To make an official application for admission, students must hand in the application form, duly completed, to the department in charge of organizing the doctoral programme. If necessary, the specific documentation required by the course must also be handed in.
The specific admission and selection criteria for this official doctoral programme are as follows:
- Personal motivation letter.
- Academic transcript, if the student is from another university.
