Born in Barcelona in 1920, Antoni M. Badia Margarit studied at University of Barcelona, where he graduated in Romance Philology. He was rector of this university from 1978 to 1986.

He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Rovira i Virgili university on 29 April 1994. He was sponsored by his ex-student Margarid Aritzeta, who is a writer, doctor in Catalan Philology and lecturer at the URV, and who, during the ceremony, emphasized Badia´s great study of and devotion to Catalan, his commitment to his nationalist principals and the defence of the Catalan language.

He is a great scientist of the language, having done important research in numerous different fields of linguistics, and he has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the universities of Tolosa de Languedoc and Perpignan as well as the Sorbonne and KnoxCollege in Galesburg, Illinois ().
