Heterogenic Catalysis (CATHETER)

Fabrication and characterization of materials of catalytic interest

We have prepared materials of large surface by means of new synthetic routes to be used mainly as catalysts or catalyst supports. Worth mentioning is the preparation of different crystal phases of hydroxides and oxyhydroxides of aluminium as precursors of alumina of large surface and NiAl2O4. We have also prepared coals to be used as supports. Moreover, we have performed comparative studies of the morphology and characteristics of Nickel oxides prepared from different precursors and we have designed a large variety of NiO-MgO systems. More recently we have worked also on the preparation and modification of zeolites, esmecites and hydrocalcites through the use of the microwave technology and with the aim of obtaining materials with interesting properties for different reactions.

Green chemistry and environmental catalysis

The group CATHETER has worked in this research line for more than 10 years. More recently, with help from the company Destilaciones Bordas Chinchurreta S.A we have started to work on the obtention of new catalysts with basic properties controlled through innovative synthesis processes as well as on the study of their catalytic activity.

Environmental applications

The research group works on the design of new environmental technologies based in catalytic processes or materials. Some of the technologies developed are the elimination of organic material industrial affluents, the eliminations of nitrates and nitrites from consumable water, among others.

Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials.

The group CATHETER works on the design and synthesis of nanomaterials of interest, for their applications in catalysis, electronics, optics, aeronautics, cosmetics, etc. The composition of nanomaterials that we have synthesized are diverse: silver, gold, platinum, copper, palladium, nickel, nickel oxide, hydrotalcites, etc, of dimensions between 4 and 500 nm, of different geometric form (espheric, cubic, plate, filament, polyhedral, etc.) and with different composition (mono o bimetalic).
