Discussion Session of the territorial participation process of the Catalan Strategy Climate for Change Adaptation, in Tarragona.

The seventh and last participation session that the Catalan Office for Climate Change has organized in order to present the preliminary document of the Catalan Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (ECACC) as well as to collect the opinions, amendments and suggestions on proposed measures to adapt to climate change, took place the 16th October in Campus Catalunya, Universitat Rovira I Virgili.

The DOW/URV Chair on Sustainable Development, together with the Territorial Analysis and Touristic Studies Research Group have been the local organizers of the activity. The representatives of different sectors of the Camp de Tarragona (agriculture, industry, tourism, health, architecture, energy, water, waste, nature protection areas, etc..) were invited.

The event was chaired by Dr. Misericòrida Carles, URV Vice-rector of Transfer and Innovation and Mr. Cesar Puig, Director of Regional Services in Tarragona of Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

The presentation of the Catalan Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change has been carried out by Mr. Salvador Samitier, Director of the Catalan Office for Climate Change. Previously, Dr. Oscar Saladié, Director of the DOW/URV Chair of Sustainable Development, thanked the attendees for their participation in this event, framed squarely on the objectives of the DOW/URV Chair of Sustainable Development.

Salvador Samitier made a presentation highlighting that climate change is a reality, mainly due to anthropogenic factors and represents consequences for natural ecosystems and for different socio-economic activities, with emphasis on the impacts and take place in Catalonia (negative on wine quality, establishment of exotic species, decreased water availability, changes in species distribution, etc.). For this reason, it is necessary to establish policies and measures to adapt to climate change.

In Tarragona the adaptation measures that will have to be implemented in the coastal zone due to observed and projected increase in temperature, the increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events or sea level rise have been treated more thoroughly.

After the presentation, the forty participants were divided into different groups for discussion and, empowered by La Vola, suggested changes and improvements in the measures already proposed from the Catalan Office for Climate Change in order to adapt to climate change.
